An insight into Juvenile GAA development…
by Thoma Mc Elligott
Welcome to Dubai Celt Juveniles, where we cater for children from the ages of 6 up to U18. We have training and games in both football and hurling. We are open to all children who have an interest in GAA sports. At a typical session, we normally have 30-40 children spread across different age group and skill sets. Children are split into an appropriate group based on ages and skills, and we have quite an even mix between boys and girls. Children are welcome to attend our sessions on Saturdays from 4 to 5.30 pm. We are currently based in Jebel Ali Primary School.
Membership details and forms are available when you visit the training sessions. Please contact Thoma Mc Elligott, Juvenile Officer, at firstname.lastname@example.org or +971505501285 for further details.
During the 2016-2017 season so far, we have had a friendly tournament with Abu Dhabi and more games are planned throughout the season. The games were extremely competitive with wins on both sides and even a draw. Great day for all!
During 2013-14, our Juveniles attended the Na Fianna Juvenile GAA blitz on the 16th November in Zayed Sports. The event was well organised and we had 3 teams playing in the football tournament and 1 hurling team. We entered an U8 team, U10 and U12 team; the main competition came from GEMS, with teams from Jumeirah Primary School and Jumeirah College, in addition to the host club, Na Fianna. We had 21 children travelling to the event and they were really looking forward to competitive games.
Each age group played the other 2 teams in the initial stage with the 2 top teams in the group competing in a final. Dubai Celts were in all 3 finals and were victorious in all 3 age groups. We encountered some really stiff competition and the excitement in these close games and the games created a great atmosphere, with some superb vocal support for all supporters. We played an exhibition game of hurling with some members from the other clubs joining the Celts for a very entertaining game. The spectators, particularly those behind the goal area, were on alert for some superb shots on goal.
It was great to see so many girls and boys participating and we hope to build on this event to create more Juvenile competitions during 2014.
A big thank you to Na Fianna for organising a superb event and for providing food and drink for the teams. It was much appreciated and we had happy children driving back to Dubai with their hard won silverware.
We played our next tournament on Friday 31st in Abu Dhabi with 2 age groups, U10 and U14. We had competition provided by Na Fianna, and teams from JPS/JC. Celts had 20 players and were able to compete strongly with out U14 losing out by 1 point to JC in a very competitive final. The U10 trophy was awarded to Na Fianna for a very spirited performance by their team, made up mainly of U 8 children. It was great to see so many children playing and enjoying their gaelic games.
A big thank you to all the parents and coaches for their assistance, and most importantly to the children for their excellent performance and behavior.
